A Bridge That Is Really a Mountain of Earth

The Ōtagiri Bridge (大田切橋梁, Ōtagiri Kyōryō) is a stone and brick railway structure carrying the Echigo TOKImeki Railway's Myōkō Haneuma Line across the Ōtagiri River in Myōkō City, Niigata Prefecture, completed in 1887 and entered on the national register of Tangible Cultural Properties on 4 February 2021.

Call it a bridge and you will look for the wrong thing. There is no span overhead, no visible steelwork, nothing that announces itself as you ride over it. Passengers on the line cross without noticing anything at all.

The reason is an engineering decision taken in the 1880s. This crossing was one of the hardest points on the mountain section of the Shin'etsu main line, and the original proposal was a steel viaduct. Steel at that date was an expensive import, and the engineers chose the alternative available to them: fill the ravine. They built an embankment across the valley and drove an arched culvert through the base of it to carry the river.

So the water passes through the structure rather than under a deck. The registration records a bridge length of 80 metres, a culvert 94 metres long and 7.6 metres wide, with wing walls. The railway operator gives the culvert a height of 7.8 metres and notes that this makes it about 1.6 times the size of an ordinary single-track railway tunnel of the period.

That oversizing was not standard practice. According to the operator, local elders advised enlarging the opening beyond the planned dimensions, and the advice was taken. The Ōtagiri is a river that carries debris flows off the flank of Mount Myōkō, and the extra capacity has since absorbed repeated floods and landslides that a tighter culvert would probably not have survived.

Six Hundred Days and Seventy-Nine Deaths

The contractor was the Kajima Gumi, ancestor of today's Kajima Corporation, and the numbers the railway company publishes are worth reading slowly. A thousand workers a day. Roughly six hundred days of work. Around three hundred thousand worker-days in total, moving earth into a ravine by hand and barrow.

Sixteen men died in construction accidents. Sixty-three died of cholera.

The line opened in November 1887. The engineer named in the national record as responsible for construction is Honma Eiichirō, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs cites the structure as evidence of the technical level Japan had reached in the founding decades of its railways, barely fifteen years after the first line ran between Shinbashi and Yokohama.

The height of the fill above the culvert is one point where the sources part company. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes an embankment of over three metres. The railway operator states about thirty-six metres. The figures are far enough apart that they are unlikely to be describing the same measurement, and readers should treat the height as unresolved rather than pick one.

Reading the Masonry

The culvert is built from two materials doing two jobs. The arch itself is brick, laid in rings, because brick could be shaped to a curve and delivered in quantity. Everything else is stone: the portals at each end, the side walls, and the invert.

The invert deserves a moment. It is an inverted arch built into the floor of the culvert, curving downward instead of up. On soft ground, a structure of this weight tends to squeeze the earth beneath it and be pushed up from below; the invert closes the section into a complete ring so that the walls cannot spread and the floor cannot rise. Building one adds cost and time. Its presence here says something about how seriously the ground conditions were taken.

The stonework has been described two ways. The railway operator calls it coursed ashlar and estimates around eighteen thousand blocks. The national record describes the side walls as being in the manner of Bluff masonry, the squared-block walling associated with the foreign settlement on the Yokohama Bluff in the same era. Both accounts point at the same thing: rectangular blocks, laid in level courses, with joints that run as continuous lines.

Stone wing walls splay outward at the upstream and downstream mouths, guiding the current into the opening and holding back the fill on either side.

Seeing It, Safely

The structure lies between Sekiyama and Nihongi stations on the Myōkō Haneuma Line, in the stretch of Myōkō City where the addresses run from Sakaguchi-Shinden to Futamata. From Sekiyama Station the walk is close to thirty minutes. There is no visitor centre, no path, and no viewing platform.

Take this seriously: the Ōtagiri Bridge is live railway infrastructure in daily use. The track above and the culvert below are railway property. Do not enter the permanent way, and do not walk into the culvert. View the structure from public roads and public land, and if you want a closer look, approach the operator rather than the fence.

The line itself is the easiest way to experience the crossing. The Myōkō Haneuma Line runs 37.7 kilometres from Myōkō-Kōgen to Naoetsu and passed from JR East to the Echigo TOKImeki Railway in March 2015, when the Hokuriku Shinkansen was extended to Kanazawa. Trains are usually two-car sets with one-person operation, and the front of the cab area is often open to passengers for a forward view.

Nihongi Station, at the northern end of this section, is worth building into the trip. It retains a working switchback, a zig-zag arrangement built because steam locomotives could not take the gradient up to Sekiyama directly, and it is one of the few places in Japan where the manoeuvre can still be watched from a platform.

A small note on the name. The property is registered as 大田切, while the river is generally written 太田切. Both readings are Ōtagiri, and the difference is a single stroke.
