The station opened a year later, in 1911, and the building still serves passengers on the Myoko Haneuma Line.
It has a hipped roof (Yosemune-zukuri) in metal sheeting and a building area of 273 square meters. The north half is the waiting room, entered from the east side, and the south half holds the office. It was altered in the early Showa period and again around 1991, but in 2018 Echigo Tokimeki Railway refurbished the exterior and announced that it had restored the building to its earlier appearance.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a passenger building of the former Shin'etsu Main Line that conveys what a railway station looked like at the end of the Meiji era (1868 to 1912). The model it sets lies in the exterior: a lean-to canopy (Geya), a band of clerestory windows and carefully finished eaves.
Clerestory Windows and Eave Details
At the Nihongi Station Building the canopy wraps the east, west and north sides. Along the east and west faces, a row of high windows sits above the canopy and just below the main eaves. The railway's line guide explains them as windows for daylight: a deep canopy darkens the rooms inside, so light is let in above it.
Look closely at the eaves too. The underside of each rafter end is cut with a moulded profile, and a fascia board finishes the eave line. The building reads as Japanese from outside, yet the line guide notes that the roof space is framed with a Western-style Truss, a pairing typical of Meiji railway architecture.
Inside, the old parcels window, used until the late Showa period, now displays items connected with the station. The line guide mentions a fare table from 1979 and a "queue here to board" sign thought to date from the late Taisho or early Showa years.
Visiting
The Nihongi Station Building is a working station, and anyone can use the waiting room. There is no ticket window, but there is a ticket machine and toilets. According to the prefectural tourism site, a small cafe run inside the building opens daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., so that is the time to find the interior at its liveliest. The office rooms are closed to the public.
The row of clerestory windows is easiest to read from the forecourt, looking along the east face at an angle. Step under the canopy and look up to see the moulded rafter ends. Photography should not get in the way of trains or passengers.
