What Is the Echigo Tokimeki Railway Nihongi Station Underground Passage and Shelter?
The Echigo Tokimeki Railway Nihongi Station Underground Passage and Shelter (えちごトキめき鉄道二本木駅地下道及び上屋) is a reinforced-concrete pedestrian subway with a timber stair shelter, built in 1942 at Nihongi Station, Itabashi, Nakago Ward, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on September 10, 2019. It links the station building with the north end of the island platform beneath the tracks, and passengers still use it every day.
The passage is 28 meters long, with stairs at both ends, and turns in a U-shape. A timber shelter of 21 square meters covers the stairs on the station-building side. Both were renovated in the 1975 to 1984 period.
Why It Was Registered
The Nihongi Station Underground Passage and Shelter was registered on September 10, 2019, in the 93rd round of listings, as No. 15-500, under the criterion of a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. It is classed as a civil engineering structure and counted as 1 unit.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a rare surviving example of a pre-war station subway on the former Shin'etsu Main Line. A passenger subway cast in reinforced concrete during wartime, still in service after renovation, was what made the case.
A U-Shaped Subway Under a Timber Roof
Walking the Echigo Tokimeki Railway Nihongi Station Underground Passage and Shelter, you leave the station building, go down a flight of stairs, cross under the tracks, turn, and climb up to the north end of the platform. The U-shaped plan simply bends the route to fit where the building and platform sit.
The shelter over the station-side stairs has a gabled metal roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) running north to south, with waist-high windows along its east and west sides, and a Japanese-style timber roof frame (Wagoya). A small wooden building set over a concrete stairwell to keep out snow and rain is a sensible, unshowy pairing for a pre-war country station.
Visiting
The Nihongi Station Underground Passage and Shelter is the route to the platform. Board or leave a train at Nihongi and you follow it from end to end: under the shelter, down the stairs, through the subway and up onto the platform.
The run of windows on the shelter is easiest to see from the station-building side. The passage is a working walkway, so stand aside if you stop to look. The station has no ticket window but does have a ticket machine.
