The Shimaki Akahiko Lodging (島木赤彦寓居) is a wing of a house on an old highway of the early Meiji period in Hirookaharashinden, Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 17, 2020 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a metal roof and a building area of 42 square metres, extended in the late Meiji period and altered between 1955 and 1964; registration number 20-0565.
A Wing Facing the Zenkoji Road
The Shimaki Akahiko Lodging stands in Hirookaharashinden in the north of Shiojiri, its plot facing the Zenkoji Kaido highway (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a single-storey timber building under a gabled metal roof, once a wing of the main house of the Ota family residence.
A crest ornament on the low-pitched gable gives it the look of the honmune style of the region (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Inside is a single eight-mat room, with an entrance to the north and a veranda to the south. Shimaki Akahiko was a tanka poet of the Araragi school, and the Shiojiri City Library counts him among the poets connected with the city.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency notes that it conveys the character of the old highway, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.
