A Western-Style Hall Built by Teachers
The Shimoina Education Hall (下伊那教育会館, Shimoina Kyōikukai-kan) is a two-storey wooden Western-style building completed in 1938 in Nakanomachi, Iida City, Nagano Prefecture, which serves as the headquarters of the Shimoina Education Association and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 7 October 2014.
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the ground floor holds offices and the upper floor is a lecture hall. The building covers 342 square metres, with a tiled roof and walls of Shitami-itabari clapboard. The national database also records a renovation in 1981.
The hall stands on the north side of a street in Nakanomachi, once part of the samurai quarter of Iida's castle town, and faces south toward the road. Behind a front garden of clipped pines, its long two-storey facade is laid out symmetrically on either side of a central entrance.
Why It Was Registered
The Shimoina Education Hall was registered for contributing to the historic landscape, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a Western-style building that has become a local landmark.
The facade is what earns that description. At the centre of the roof rises a mansard-style Hafu gable, the wall below it is decorated with a geometric pattern, and a dormer window sits on the roof to either side. The clapboard walls are lined with tall, narrow windows. On a street where samurai-era gates and earthen storehouses survive, this front stands out at once.
It is also a building that a teachers' organisation put up for itself. The association's history records the hall's opening ceremony in 1938, directly after the events marking its fiftieth anniversary in 1937. More than eighty years on, the same association still has its office here.
What to Look At
The mansard gable
At the centre of the Shimoina Education Hall the roofline steps up into a gable with the broken, two-pitch profile of a mansard roof. In the association's photographs a small finial crowns the gable, and a louvred vent is set into its face.
The geometric panels
Directly above the entrance, three tall windows sit side by side, and the wall above them is filled with a pattern of crossing diagonal lines. This is the geometric ornament the national description mentions, and it is the most carefully worked part of the facade.
The dormers
One dormer window pokes out of the tiled roof on each side of the central gable. Each has its own small roof and was meant to bring light and air into the roof space.
Clapboard and tall windows
The walls are clad in overlapping horizontal boards, with tall windows set at regular intervals on both floors. In photographs the boards are painted white, while the window frames and the vertical strips between them are a pale blue-grey. A porch on square posts projects from the middle of the front.
Visiting
The Shimoina Education Hall is a working office building. As of October 2026 there was no notice of public access to the interior or to the lecture hall.
The central gable, the dormers, the clapboard walls and the pines of the front garden can all be seen from the street to the south. The car park is for members and authorised users only and is not open to visitors. Unless you have business with the association, please stay out of the front garden and the building.
