Former Nagasaki Higher Commercial School

The Former Nagasaki Higher Commercial School buildings stand on the Faculty of Economics campus of Nagasaki University in Katafuchi, Nagasaki: the research hall of 1919 (Keirin Hall), the warehouse of 1907 and the arched bridge of 1903, registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2007 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

According to the Japan Tourism Agency's multilingual explanations, the school was absorbed into the Faculty of Economics of Nagasaki University in 1949 and ended its history as an independent institution; its gatehouse was moved to Glover Garden in 1976.

The Three Structures

Keirin Hall, on the east side of the campus, is a two-storey brick research hall, symmetrical about a gable and carriage porch, with Secession-style ornament (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The warehouse, on the west side, is a two-storey brick building, the only one left from the founding years.

The arched bridge carries the way over the Nishiyama River on the west side of the campus in a segmental arch of smoothly dressed stone (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
