A Truss Bridge over the Haiki Strait
The Kancho Bridge (観潮橋) is a road bridge of 1954 in Haiki, Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on June 24, 2021 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a steel pony truss bridge with a steel grating deck, 36 metres long and 7.5 metres wide; registration number 42-0138.
A Bridge at the Narrows
Kancho Bridge carries a road across the narrowest part of the Haiki Strait, east of Hario Island (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a single-span steel pony Warren truss, 36 metres long and 7.5 metres wide.
It crosses the spot called Shionome, one of the Eight Views of Hirado and known for its racing tidal current (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape, as a trunk-road structure that, together with Saikai Bridge on the west side of Hario Island, supported the post-war growth of Nagasaki.
