A Merchant House on the Old Road

The main house of the Hamoto family faces east onto the road that led from the castle town of Yamatokoriyama to Nara (Agency for Cultural Affairs). In the Meiji period the family ran a money-changing business, among other trades.

It is a house with a low attic storey under a gabled pantile roof with a smoke vent, entered on the long side. Fine projecting lattices and a fold-down bench below and long narrow mushiko windows above give it a neat front (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape, a merchant house that forms part of the scene of the old road.
