What the Kawai Family Residence (Kitayagi) Is

The Kawai Family Residence (Kitayagi) (河合家住宅, Kawai-ke Jūtaku) is a large merchant estate in Kitayagicho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, whose seven structures, built between the late Edo period and 1922, were listed together as Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 7 August 2009. The seven are the main house, the northwest storehouse, the inner storehouse and connecting corridor, the Rojimon gate, the detached parlor and tea room, the Nagayamon gate and the boundary wall, carrying consecutive register numbers from 29-0134 to 29-0140.

In the national database of the Agency for Cultural Affairs the estate is simply the Kawai Family Residence. Kashihara has a second house of that name, in the old merchant town of Imai, so the city labels this one Kawai Family Residence (Kitayagi), and the city tourism association introduces it as the Kawai Eiji Family Residence, after the family head. The Imai house belongs to a different Kawai family, sake brewers trading as Johonjiya.

Next door to the south stands the Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence. It is also a listed property, but under a separate listing, and it is not one of the seven covered here. The city counts the two Kawai houses, side by side along the same road, among the elements that give the Yagi townscape its historic character.

All seven were listed under the same criterion: a contribution to the historic landscape of the country. What earns the listing is not any single building so much as the survival of a complete estate, from the street front on the old road through to the parlor at the back and the gate and wall on the north side.

A Merchant House North of the Crossroads

Yagi grew up around Fuda-no-Tsuji, the crossroads where the Shimotsumichi, an ancient highway running north to south through the Nara Basin, meets the Yokooji, which runs east to west. The city describes the quarter as a hub of traffic and trade from antiquity into the modern era, crowded in its day with pilgrims bound for the Ise Grand Shrine. The Kawai Family Residence (Kitayagi) stands just north of the crossroads, its west side on the Shimotsumichi.

For the family's own history the source is the Kashihara City Tourism Association. By 1842, under the eighth head, Kawai Shokuro, the family ran a business pressing lamp oil, and the buildings are thought to have existed by then. By 1859 the ninth Shokuro served as village headman and also dealt as a money changer, and by that date the retirement quarters and the inner storehouse had been built.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates the main house to the late Edo period with work in the closing Edo decades, and the inner storehouse and the Rojimon gate to the closing decades alone. The dates line up comfortably with the family's story.

The estate changed most in the Taisho era. In 1921 a detached parlor and tea room went up toward the east side of the plot. In 1922 the Nagayamon gate was built on the northern street, with a wall turning the corner from the east side to join it. The Edo-period merchant front on the old road was left as it was; the family added a reception wing behind it and a new formal entrance to the north.

How the Estate Is Laid Out

The estate faces west, onto the Shimotsumichi. At the northwest corner the northwest storehouse, Inuigura, pushes forward of the main house toward the road; inui is the old name for the northwest direction. South of it the 20-metre front of the main house runs along the street, and at the southern end of the west side the Rojimon gate opens onto the retirement quarters. Those three make up the frontage you see from the old road.

The retirement quarters are attached to the southeast corner of the main house. Behind them, across a small courtyard garden, stands the inner storehouse, linked to them by the connecting corridor. The detached parlor and tea room sit toward the east of the plot. The Nagayamon gate faces the northern street, and the boundary wall joins it, turning a right angle from the east side to the north side.

The national database records two lot numbers. The main house, the northwest storehouse, the inner storehouse and corridor and the Rojimon gate are at 2-154-1 Kitayagicho; the detached parlor and tea room, the Nagayamon gate and the wall are at 2-168-1. The four Edo-period structures cluster on the west, along the old road, and the three Taisho additions on the east and north.

From outside, the sensible order is to take in the street front on the Shimotsumichi first, then walk round to the northern street for the gate and the wall. That way the merchant face of the late Edo period and the entrance the family added in the Taisho era can be compared one after the other.

Visiting and Access

The Kawai Family Residence (Kitayagi) is a private home and the interior is not open to the public. The tourism association states plainly that visits are not possible (checked 26 September 2026). What a visitor can see is the exterior, from the public road.

Two sides are easy to view. From the Shimotsumichi on the west you see the northwest storehouse, the main house and the Rojimon gate in a row; from the northern street, the Nagayamon gate and the wall. The inner storehouse and corridor and the detached parlor and tea room lie deep inside the plot and are hard to make out from any street.

No sign or notice prohibiting photography was found. People live here, though, so keep the lens away from the lattice, the inside of the gates and the windows. Standing on the far side of the road gives a better sense of the estate's size in any case.

The estate is within walking distance of three stations. According to the tourism association it is about 10 minutes on foot from Unebi Station on the JR Sakurai Line (Manyo Mahoroba Line), about 11 minutes from Yagi-Nishiguchi Station on the Kintetsu Kashihara Line and about 15 minutes from Kintetsu Yamato-Yagi Station. No visitor parking is advertised. Walk south past the Kawai Genshichiro house next door and you reach the Fuda-no-Tsuji crossroads.
