What the Kawai Family Residence Wall Is
The Kawai Family Residence Wall (河合家住宅塀, Kawai-ke Jūtaku Hei) is a timber boundary wall built in 1922 in Kitayagicho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 7 August 2009. It runs along the east side of the merchant estate, turns a right angle along the north side and meets the Nagayamon gate.
It is 30 metres long, corner included, and 2.5 metres high, capped with a round-and-flat Hongawarabuki tile roof. The national database classes it as an other structure rather than a building; with the Rojimon gate, it is one of the two items among the estate's seven that are not buildings.
It dates from the same year as the Nagayamon gate and followed the detached parlor and tea room of 1921. The wall enclosing the east and north and the gate on the north were made together, as one piece of work.
Why It Was Listed
The Kawai Family Residence Wall was listed for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs commentary says it resembles a tsuiji-bei and tightens the streetscape.
A tsuiji-bei is properly a wall of rammed earth under a tiled roof, the dignified type that surrounds temples and the old imperial palace. The Kawai wall is not earth at all but a timber frame with rendered faces, yet from the street it reads much like one. It achieves the look of a heavy, formal wall with a light timber structure.
Its job is to draw the outline of the estate. On the northern street it continues from the east end of the gatehouse, turns the corner and runs south along the east side. Together with the 19 metres of the gatehouse, it wraps the northeast corner of the estate in one continuous face.
What to Look For
Start at the foot of the Kawai Family Residence Wall. Timber posts stand on a line of natural stones, laid as a footing, and the frame is built up from them. The irregular shapes of the stones give the bottom edge of the wall its character.
The two faces are finished differently. The street side is rendered in mortar; the inner side is black shikkui plaster with a brushed finish, fine lines drawn across the surface with a brush to leave a slightly rough texture. The inner face is inside the grounds, though, and cannot be seen from the street.
A tiled roof runs along the top, 30 metres of tile line above a 2.5-metre wall, turning at the corner. Stand at the corner and look both ways to see how the right-angled plan works.
Visiting
The Kawai Family Residence Wall is privately owned, but as the outer boundary of the estate its street face can be seen from the public road (checked 26 September 2026). The brushed black plaster of the inner face is inside the grounds and is not visible.
See it on the northern street together with the Nagayamon gate, then walk round the corner to the east side. The stone footing and posts can be examined close up; the tile line and the full length are clearer from the opposite side of the road.
