What the Kawai Family Residence Main House Is

The Kawai Family Residence Main House (河合家住宅主屋, Kawai-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is a large merchant townhouse of the late Edo period (1751 to 1829) in Kitayagicho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 7 August 2009. It fronts the Shimotsumichi, the ancient north-south road, on the west side of the plot, and it is the largest of the estate's seven listed structures.

It measures 20 metres by 12 metres, under a tiled roof of the gabled Kirizuma-zukuri type, with a building area of 261 square metres. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives two periods for it, the late Edo period and the closing Edo decades (1830 to 1867), and notes a renovation in 1997. The reading is a house built in the late Edo period and altered again before the shogunate fell.

The records disagree on its height. The structural field in the national database calls it single-storey, while the commentary in the same entry describes a Tsushi-nikai house, one with a low loft storey tucked under the roof. Seen from the street such a house looks almost single-storey, which may explain the two readings. Both are given here rather than one being chosen.

Why It Was Listed

The Kawai Family Residence Main House was listed for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs commentary calls it a large merchant house with a weighty, imposing exterior.

Inside, a through-passage of beaten earth, the tōri-doma, runs along the north side from the street to the back of the house. Merchants moved goods and people along it without stepping up onto the floor. To the south of the passage, nine rooms are arranged three abreast and three deep. Shop at the front and household behind, all under one roof: this is the classic merchant plan, here on a generous scale.

Retirement quarters are attached at the southeast corner. According to the Kashihara City Tourism Association they already existed by 1859, and the association believes the buildings were standing by 1842, when the eighth family head, Kawai Shokuro, ran a business pressing lamp oil. That places the Kawai Family Residence Main House in the oldest layer of the estate.

Its position matters too. With the northwest storehouse to the north and the Rojimon gate to the south, the main house makes up the street front of the estate, one piece of the townscape along a road that has been in use since antiquity.

What to Look For

Start with the lattice. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as stout, and it is: not a fine screen of slender slats but a row of heavy timbers set across the front, which gives the whole facade its weight.

Then look at the eaves. The eaves of the lower roof are kept low, and the wall above them is sealed in shikkui plaster. Low eaves with a white, plastered band above are the signature of a loft-storey townhouse. The low eaves, stepped ridges and broad roof that the tourism association singles out as the estate's character are all there to be read on the Kawai Family Residence Main House.

Walk its length rather than framing it alone. To the north the northwest storehouse steps forward of the house; at the southern end the Rojimon gate opens. White storehouse, lattice front and tiled gate make one continuous run, with the 20 metres of the main house in the middle.

Visiting

The Kawai Family Residence Main House is a private home and the interior is not open. No arrangement for seeing the earthen passage or the rooms could be found (checked 26 September 2026). The exterior can be seen from the Shimotsumichi.

For the lattice and eaves, stand on the house side of the road. For the layering of the roofs, cross to the far side. The front faces west, so afternoon light brings out the depth of the lattice best.
