What Is the Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence Boundary Wall?

The Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence Boundary Wall (河合源七郎家住宅境界塀, Kawai Genshichirō-ke Jūtaku Kyōkaibei) is an early Taisho-era roofed wooden wall of the 1910s in Kitayagi-cho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 2, 2009. It continues south from the west face of the main house and turns the southwest corner of the estate, enclosing a small courtyard garden.

The wall is 8.2 meters long including the turn and 3.5 meters high, capped with a Sangawara-buki tiled roof. Tall vertical boarding covers the lower part, with a wall surface above. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes that upper surface as earthen, while Nara Prefecture calls it Shikkui plaster, so the sources disagree.

Why It Was Registered

The Kawai Genshichiro boundary wall was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as an unusually tall wall that, with the main house, gives the estate a dignified face on the old road.

Its height stands out within the estate. The middle gate and wall behind the house are 2.7 meters tall and even the formal guest entrance reaches only 3.2 meters; the boundary wall tops both. From the street, a sheer wall rises right where the main house frontage ends, closing off the southern corner. Kashihara City lists it alongside the main house and guest entrance as part of the street front.

A Garden in the Unlucky Corner

What the wall shelters is a courtyard garden in the southwest corner of the plot. Both the national and prefectural descriptions note that this corner is the ura-kimon, the "back demon gate." In traditional Japanese geomancy the northeast was the unlucky direction through which misfortune entered, and the opposite southwest corner also called for care. Here the family left that corner open as a garden and closed it with a tall wall, some 20 years after the main house went up.

What to Look For

Boarding Carried Up High

From outside, vertical boards cover more than half the height of the Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence Boundary Wall, far above the usual skirting of a board fence, with the wall surface and tiled roof above. The vertical lines exaggerate its height and contrast with the horizontal spread of the lattices on the main house next to it.

The Turn at the Corner

The wall runs south along the Shimotsumichi as an extension of the main house frontage and then turns at a right angle. Following it around the corner shows how it wraps the garden on 2 sides. It is also worth noticing how the tiled roof line resolves at the turn.

How to Visit

The garden inside the Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence Boundary Wall is private and not open to visitors (checked September 27, 2026), and at 3.5 meters the wall is too tall to see over.

The outer face runs along the Shimotsumichi and can be viewed from the public road. Walking north from Fuda-no-Tsuji, it is the first part of the estate you reach. To appreciate its height, compare it with the eaves of the main house from across the road.
