What Is the Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence?

The Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence (河合源七郎家住宅, Kawai Genshichirō-ke Jūtaku) is a large merchant townhouse estate in Kitayagi-cho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, whose seven structures, built between the 1890s and the early Taisho era, were registered together as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on November 2, 2009. The seven are the main house, the detached parlor and tea room, the inner storehouse, the outer storehouse, the middle gate and wall, the guest entrance, and the boundary wall, carrying consecutive registration numbers 29-0142 to 29-0148.

The estate was built by the first Kawai Genshichiro. Documents released by Nara Prefecture at the time of registration note that he served as mayor of Yagi Town from September 1900 to August 1904, a busy stretch that bracketed the Russo-Japanese War. The prefecture reads this as evidence that the main house and inner storehouse were already standing when he took office.

Today the Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence belongs to Tsuchihashiya Genshichi Co., Ltd. The owner's website is signed by the fourth-generation Kawai Genshichiro, and the house is rented out as a location for photo and film shoots.

A Crossroads Town and a Vanished Market

Yagi grew up where two ancient roads cross: the Shimotsumichi, which runs north to south through the Nara Basin, and the Yokoōji, which runs east to west. The junction is called Fuda-no-Tsuji. Kashihara City describes the area as a hub of traffic and trade from antiquity into the modern era, crowded with pilgrims heading for the Ise Grand Shrine. The Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence stands just north of that junction, its west side opening onto the Shimotsumichi.

The road in front of the house holds another clue. According to Nara Prefecture, the stretch from the neighboring Kawai house down to Fuda-no-Tsuji is noticeably wider than the rest of the street because it was once the site of the Yagi market. The Genshichiro estate was laid out with a broad frontage facing that old market street.

The house next door to the north, the Kawai Family Residence (called the Kawai Eiji Family Residence by the Kashihara tourism association), was registered separately on August 7, 2009, and the prefecture describes it as the home of a related branch of the family. Kashihara City counts the two Kawai main houses side by side on the Shimotsumichi as a key part of Yagi's historic streetscape. This page covers only the seven Genshichiro structures.

How the Estate Is Laid Out

Nara Prefecture gives the plot as about 20 meters wide from north to south and about 48 meters deep from west to east. The main house sits in the middle of the west frontage. To its north are the guest entrance, a formal gate for visitors, and the inner storehouse in the northwest corner. South of the main house a tall boundary wall closes the corner. These four structures make up the face the estate shows to the street.

Behind them, the main house runs deep toward the east. Across an inner garden stand the detached parlor and tea room, and the middle gate and wall divide that garden from the service passage behind the main house. The outer storehouse occupies the far southeast corner. The street front and the garden world behind it are clearly separated.

The periods above follow the Agency for Cultural Affairs database. The prefecture dates the main house, guest entrance and both storehouses to the late 1890s and the parlor and tea room to the Taisho era, so the merchant's street front came first and the rooms for receiving guests and for tea were added behind it a generation later.

Two different registration criteria apply. The main house, both storehouses, the guest entrance and the boundary wall were registered as structures that contribute to the historic landscape of the country. The detached parlor and tea room and the middle gate and wall were registered for design that serves as a model. In other words, the street-facing buildings earned their place through the townscape, the hidden ones through their craftsmanship.

A Haiku Connection

The owner's website states that the Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence served as an early editorial office of Katsuragi, the haiku magazine founded by Awano Seiho, and that a poem card written by Takahama Kyoshi is still kept in the house. The second and third heads of the family wrote haiku under the pen names Shigyu and Shiho. These details come from the owner and do not appear in the national or prefectural records.

Visiting and Getting There

The interior of the Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence is not open for sightseeing, and the Kashihara tourism association states plainly that visits are not possible (checked September 27, 2026). The owner does rent the house as a studio for photography and filming, by reservation and for a minimum of 2 hours; that is the only way to get inside.

Everyone else sees the estate from the Shimotsumichi. From north to south the street front shows the gable end of the inner storehouse, the guest entrance, the main house and the boundary wall, and together with the Kawai house next door they form a run of old townhouses along the east side of the road. The parlor and tea room, the middle gate and wall, and the outer storehouse lie deep inside the plot and cannot be seen from the street.

No signs prohibiting photography were found. Photographing the street front from across the road is fine, but please do not aim a lens through the lattices or into the gateways of what is still a private property.

The house is within walking distance of three stations. The Kashihara tourism association gives about 10 minutes on foot from Unebi Station on the JR Sakurai Line (Manyo Mahoroba Line), about 11 minutes from Yagi-Nishiguchi Station on the Kintetsu Kashihara Line, and about 15 minutes from Kintetsu Yamato-Yagi Station. The owner's website gives 5 minutes from Yamato-Yagi, so estimates from that station vary. There is no visitor parking. Walking north along the Shimotsumichi from Fuda-no-Tsuji, the boundary wall and main house come into view first.
