What Is the Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence Guest Entrance?

The Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence Guest Entrance (河合源七郎家住宅貴賓口, Kawai Genshichirō-ke Jūtaku Kihinguchi) is a mid-Meiji gateway for visitors in Kitayagi-cho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 2, 2009. Nara Prefecture dates it, like the main house, to the late 1890s. It opens onto the Shimotsumichi road between the main house and the inner storehouse.

The opening is 2.7 meters wide and 3.2 meters high. Its small roof slopes down on both sides and is finished with straight-edged tiles that give the eaves a crisp, level line. The registration record lists it as wooden, tiled with some copper sheeting, 2.7 meters in length.

Why It Was Registered

The Kawai Genshichiro guest entrance was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with giving the estate a dignified street front.

In an ordinary townhouse, everyone came and went through the lattice doors of the shop front and into the earthen passage. Here the family built a second, separate way in, just for guests. According to Nara Prefecture, the Kihinguchi leads into a small courtyard overlooked by the formal entrance hall and altar room of the main house. Customers went to the shop room; honored guests came through this gate and the garden. The doorway itself sorted visitors by rank.

The Kashihara tourism association also singles out the gable end of the storehouse and this gate as what gives the frontage its varied rhythm. Set lower between a white storehouse and the lattices of the main house, the Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence Guest Entrance breaks the street front and hints at depth behind it.

What to Look For

Lattice Outside, Solid Doors Inside

The opening closes with 2 layers of doors: an outer lattice door with a small Kugurido wicket, and inner double doors of solid boards. With only the lattice shut, passers-by can sense the garden beyond; with the boards closed as well, nothing is visible. The gate could show a welcoming or a closed face depending on whether guests were expected.

A Deep Copper Canopy

Above the doors a deep canopy roofed in copper sheet projects under the tiled roof, sheltering waiting visitors from the rain. The front wall is plastered in Shikkui above vertical board panelling, matching the finish of the neighboring storehouse and main house.

How to Visit

The Kawai Genshichiro Family Residence Guest Entrance is a private gate and cannot be entered or passed through (checked September 27, 2026). The courtyard and entrance hall behind it are only accessible during studio bookings arranged with the owner.

The gate front faces the Shimotsumichi and can be seen from the public road. Because the opening is squeezed between the storehouse gable to the north and the main house lattices to the south, the best view of how it sits between them is from the west side of the road. Please leave the lattice and wicket doors untouched.
