The South Wing behind the Main Front

The Nara Prefectural Unebi High School Main Building South Wing (奈良県立畝傍高等学校本館南館) is a 3-storey reinforced concrete school building of 1933 in Yagicho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 13, 2012 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a 3-storey reinforced concrete building with a tower and a building area of 755 square metres, renovated in 1969, 1973 and 1990; registration number 29-0200.

The Parallel Wing Behind

The Nara Prefectural Unebi High School Main Building South Wing runs parallel to the south of the North Wing and is joined to it by the Connecting Corridor (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a 3-storey block 75.1 metres from east to west and 10 metres deep, 19.6 metres shorter than the North Wing.

At the centre of its rear, the south side, sits a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri tower roofed in traditional tiles, and tiles also edge the flat roof all round (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Where the North Wing marks its front with a pyramidal tower, the South Wing marks its back with a gabled one.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered the Nara Prefectural Unebi High School Main Building South Wing as a model of design, noting that together with the North Wing it preserves the appearance of a school of the early Showa era.

The school history also mentions a "new South Building" completed in 1986; that is a different building. What was registered is the South Wing of the 1933 main building, which has remained in use after the major renovation of 1990.

What to Look For

On the Nara Prefectural Unebi High School Main Building South Wing, look for the gabled tower at the centre of the rear and the tiled eaves around the roof edge. The roof form differs from the North Wing's pyramidal tower, but the same tiled eave line ties the two wings together.

Visiting

The Nara Prefectural Unebi High School Main Building South Wing is also a working school building, and no official information on interior access or photography was found. A visit depends on the school's permission.
