A Small Timber Outbuilding of 1933
The Nara Prefectural Unebi High School Storehouse (Former Power Room) (奈良県立畝傍高等学校倉庫(旧動力室)) is a single-storey timber outbuilding of 1933 in Yagicho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 13, 2012 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 30 square metres; registration number 29-0202.
A Small Gabled Building North of the South Wing
The Nara Prefectural Unebi High School Storehouse (Former Power Room) stands against the western part of the South Wing's north side, with doorways opening to the north and south (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is almost square, 5.5 metres by 5.5 metres, with a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles and its entrance in the gable end, the Tsumairi arrangement.
As the name in brackets says, it was once the power room and is now treated as a storehouse. It was built in timber in 1933, the same year as the concrete main building, as an ancillary building of the school.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered the Nara Prefectural Unebi High School Storehouse (Former Power Room) for its contribution to the historic landscape, as a record of what an ancillary school building looked like in the early Showa era. With the 3 parts of the main building, the school keeps both its classrooms and a service building of the same date on one campus.
What to Look For
The gable ends are the thing to see on the Nara Prefectural Unebi High School Storehouse (Former Power Room). The Truss framing is left exposed, and louvered ventilation windows are set into the walls, all in a Western manner (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Where the main building signals its Japanese side with tiled eaves, this small shed shows off Western roof framing instead, a different design direction in a building of the same year.
Visiting
The Nara Prefectural Unebi High School Storehouse (Former Power Room) stands on the north side of the South Wing, between the two wings. No official information on access or photography was found, and a visit depends on the school's permission.
