The West Wing at a Glance
The Nishida Family Residence Main House West Wing (西田家住宅主屋西棟, Nishida-ke Jūtaku Shuoku Nishitō) is a single-storey wooden building of the early Showa period in Minoyamacho, Yamatokoriyama City, Nara Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 17 February 2004. With a building area of 45 square metres, it is the smallest of the three wings that make up the main house.
It adjoins the Central Wing on its west side and connects to the inner storehouse at its south end. The roof is a tiled irimoya hip-and-gable, and the side entrance faces north.
Why It Matters
The Nishida Family Residence Main House West Wing was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that inside it is a plain two-room building, yet it calls it a key element in the look of the whole estate.
Its job is to step down: a low, single-storey link between the tall Central Wing and the storehouses running south. Without it, the north front would be one massive block. The West Wing breaks that mass into something more varied.
The Heptagonal Windows
What catches the eye at the Nishida Family Residence Main House West Wing is a pair of seven-sided decorative windows, one on each side of the side-entrance door. The Agency describes them as the accent of the front facade. Square and round windows are common in Japanese houses; seven-sided ones are not.
The Central Wing's porch, with its bark-roofed karahafu gable, is the ceremonial entrance for guests. The West Wing door was the everyday entrance for the household. That the builder gave even this working door such an unusual frame says a good deal about the care taken across the estate.
