The Storehouse at a Glance
The Nishida Family Residence Storehouse (西田家住宅土蔵, Nishida-ke Jūtaku Dozō) is a two-storey earthen-walled storehouse of the early Showa period in Minoyamacho, Yamatokoriyama City, Nara Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 17 February 2004. Its building area is 35 square metres.
It is attached to the west of the Main House West Wing. At 3 Ken by 2 ken it is the larger of the estate's two storehouses, and it carries a gabled kirizuma roof of traditional tiles.
Why It Was Registered
The Nishida Family Residence Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as an important part of the estate's appearance.
The east side of the estate opens into a garden with a detached room; at the west end, this two-storey storehouse closes off the group of buildings. It defines the western edge of the Nishida Family Residence.
How It Differs from the Inner Storehouse
Set the Nishida Family Residence Storehouse beside the inner storehouse and the differences are instructive. The inner storehouse has a floating okiyane roof raised above its body; this one does not. Its roof sits directly on the walls, and a lean-to on the south side shelters the entrance.
Around the base of the walls, only the south face is finished in namako tilework; the other sides are clad in vertical boards. Putting the costly finish on the entrance side and plain boards elsewhere follows the same logic as the inner storehouse, which reserves its namako wall for the side facing the corridor.
Seeing It for Yourself
The Nishida Family Residence Storehouse belongs to a private home and its interior is not open. It stands toward the back of the plot, west of the West Wing, so it may not be visible from the road.
From outside, look for a two-storey gable rising beyond the lower roofs of the main house. Keep photography to the exterior from the public road.
