About the Okahashi Family Residence Yamamori Lodgings
The Okahashi Family Residence Yamamori Lodgings (岡橋家住宅山守宿泊所, Okahashi-ke Jūtaku Yamamori Shukuhakusho) is an early Showa-period lodging southeast of the head steward's quarters on the Okahashi estate in Ozukucho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 17 August 2020 (No. 29-0306).
Yamamori were the local stewards who looked after forests in the Yoshino mountains for owners who lived elsewhere. The Okahashi family lived down on the Nara plain and left the planting and felling of its forests to them, and the stewards travelled to the house to report and settle accounts. This is where they slept.
It is a single-storey timber building of 51 square metres, somewhat larger than the lodging built for their chief, the shutto, which covers 40 square metres. The size suggests it was meant to take several stewards at once.
Why the stewards' lodging was registered
The Okahashi Family Residence Yamamori Lodgings was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, together with the shutto's lodging, it shows how the yamamori system actually operated.
The workings of Yoshino forestry survive in documents and in the memories of owners and stewards. Buildings that show how stewards were received at an owner's house are much rarer. Here, lodgings for the chief and for ordinary stewards were built as separate structures, and both survive.
Placement makes the distinction. The chief's lodging is joined to the main house; this one stands apart to its southeast. Distance from the family's rooms mirrors rank among the stewards.
What to look for on the stewards' lodging
The roof is of Sangawara-buki pantiles, with a hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) end to the north and a plain gable (Kirizuma-zukuri) to the south. The neighbouring shutto's lodging also mixes the two forms at its ends, a hint that the pair was planned together.
Inside are two rooms, north and south. Only the north room has a veranda and a projecting lattice window (Degōshi), so it was finished to a slightly higher standard. It is tempting to think a senior steward took the better room, though no record of how the rooms were allocated has been found.
The walls show their posts in the Shinkabe manner, finished in Shikkui plaster above vertical boarding (Tateita-bari). The building faces west.
Visiting the stewards' lodging
The Okahashi Family Residence Yamamori Lodgings stands inside the estate, on the northeast side of the main house, and cannot be seen from the lanes around it. The interior, including the veranda and lattice window of the north room, is not open.
The estate is private, and no public openings were announced as of September 2026. The history of the family and the yamamori system, along with directions, is on the Okahashi Family Residence page.
