Tamaya

Tamaya (玉や) is a former inn on a corner before the gate of Taimadera in Taima, Katsuragi City, Nara Prefecture, whose late Edo main house and detached guest rooms were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 25, 2016 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency notes that the main house, with its lattices, a plaster relief of pines and cranes and jewels carved on the eaves brackets, has a festive air and adds to the scene before the gate of the ancient temple.

The Two Buildings

The main house is two storeys high, hip-and-gable to the west and gabled to the east, under a gently curved pantiled roof ringed by lean-to eaves and railings (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The detached guest rooms stand north-west of it, linked by a corridor, with a railed veranda on the upper floor; the ground-floor boarded room was once two guest rooms with two alcoves and a pierced-carved transom (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The festive house on the street and the calm wing behind it make up one inn. Each building is described on its own page.
