A Richly Carved Worship Hall of 1841

The Arakawa Shrine Worship Hall and Offering Hall (荒川神社拝殿及び幣殿, Arakawa Jinja haiden oyobi heiden) is the worship hall and offering hall of 1841 joined to the front of the main sanctuary of Arakawa Shrine at Momosakihama, Tainai City, Niigata Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 5, 2019 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber building with a copper roof and a building area of 101 square metres, renovated in 1971; registration number 15-0527, owned by Arakawa Shrine.

Why It Was Registered

The Arakawa Shrine Worship Hall and Offering Hall was registered as a structure that has become a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes a solid frame with decorative detail.

What to Look For

It has a hip-and-gable copper roof shaped like thatch. The offering hall projects behind the large worship hall, flanked by an offerings room and a portable-shrine store (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Niigata Prefecture likens the distinctive roof to a face with eyes and a nose.

A richly carved porch stands at the front, and inside, four heavy rainbow beams carry decorative struts (Agency for Cultural Affairs). According to Niigata Prefecture, a painting of the Heavenly Rock Cave by the Osaka ship-plaque painter 吉本善京 hangs inside.

Visiting

The grounds of Arakawa Shrine are open to worshippers, and the shrine buildings are seen from outside; no opening of the interiors has been announced. To see the ship votive plaques in the Momosakihama storehouse on the left of the grounds, contact the Tainai City Board of Education in advance (0254-43-6111) (Niigata Prefecture).

The links between Arakawa Shrine, the Kitamaebune trade and its votive plaques are covered in the group article Arakawa Shrine.
