Three bays square at the end of the path
Chokokuji Temple Inner Sanctuary is a mid Edo period hall in Hase, Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, dated between 1661 and 1750 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2009.
It stands west of the Kannon Hall and a level higher, facing south. The plan is three bays square under a pyramidal Hōgyō-zukuri roof; the building is single-storeyed timber, roofed in copper sheet, with a floor area of 30 square metres. This is the innermost point of the precinct and the end of the approach.
All the columns are round, carrying simple three-block bracket sets, and the rafters are doubled. The centre bay of the front and of each side is open, lattice windows flank the front opening, and the remaining walls are boarded. The hall was repaired in 1977.
Listed for what was left out
Chokokuji Temple Inner Sanctuary was listed as a model of design. Only four of the fifteen listed buildings here were judged on that criterion: the Main Hall, the Kannon Hall, the Nio Gate and this one. The other eleven were listed for their contribution to the historic landscape.
The judgment rests on proportion rather than on carving. The national database calls the building a plain and lucid Buddhist hall. The simplest possible plan, three bays square, carries a roof whose four hips converge on one point, and the eaves are held by round columns and single bracket sets alone. Subtraction is the argument.
The interior is a single room. A round column stands towards the back of the central bay, panelled doors open at the front, boarding closes the sides, and the principal image sits behind. Building a smaller enclosure inside the hall gives depth to a very small space.
Four hips meeting at a point
Stand a little back from the front of Chokokuji Temple Inner Sanctuary and follow the ridges of the roof. The four hips rise to a single apex. A square plan is answered cleanly by the roof above it, and the three-bay module is what makes that possible.
The copper roof is unique in this precinct. The Main Hall and Priests' Quarters are thatched under temporary metal, the Kannon Hall and the storehouses are tiled, the Bell Tower and corridor are sheeted in iron. Reading the roofs alone tells you a good deal about date and function.
Cedars close in around the hall, so little light reaches it even at midday. The darkened boarding and the green patina of the copper both sink into that shade.
Seeing Chokokuji Temple Inner Sanctuary
Chokokuji Temple Inner Sanctuary is not covered by the guided routes. To see it, climb to the Kannon Hall and continue west and upward from there.
The doors are normally shut and the interior is not opened. Since the centre bays of the front and sides are open, the bracketing under the eaves and the lattice windows can still be studied from outside.
