The hall at the top of the steps
Chokokuji Temple Kannon Hall is a mid Edo period Buddhist hall in Hase, Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, built in 1691 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2009.
It stands at the head of the stone stairway, facing south into the slope. The timber building is single-storeyed under a tiled roof, with a floor area of 191 square metres and a front of five bays. Inside, the space divides into an outer sanctuary, an inner sanctuary and flanking chapels. Three miniature shrines are included in the listing.
The temple records a rebuilding by the priest Chien in the Shocho era, 1428 to 1431. Repairs followed in 1760 and 1888. The national database gives 1691 as the date of the present structure, while the temple's own site treats that year as a renovation, so the two accounts differ on what happened in 1691.
How an esoteric hall is put together
Chokokuji Temple Kannon Hall was listed as a model of design, and the national database describes it as an example of an esoteric Buddhist main hall of the mid Edo period.
The logic of the building shows in its columns. The outer columns are square in section; the inner ring is round. Rank is expressed by the shape of the timber itself. Bracketing around the outside is kept to a simple three-block set with nose projections, while the front of the inner sanctuary alone rises to a double-stepped set with curved Shirin panels. Ornament is not spread evenly but gathered where worshippers face.
Miniature shrines stand in each bay behind the inner sanctuary. The three standing eleven-headed Kannon Bosatsu figures kept here are hidden images, shown once every thirty-three years; the last opening was in May 2001.
Sanskrit letters overhead, and the view back down
The ceiling of the inner sanctuary is the detail most often missed in Chokokuji Temple Kannon Hall. Sanskrit characters are painted there, and from the floor they surface out of the dimness only if you remember to look up during the tour.
Outside, reach the front of the hall and then turn round. The building sits above the stairway and the roofed corridor, so the whole climb is laid out below in one view.
The Sutra Repository stands immediately to the west and the Inner Sanctuary higher up the slope. Chokokuji Temple Kannon Hall occupies the middle of those three and works as the turning point of the approach.
Seeing Chokokuji Temple Kannon Hall
The hall is included in the 50-minute guided route. Visitors are led up through the roofed corridor to the side of the building, and the commentary then moves on to the three great cedars and the Gochido pagoda. The 30-minute and 40-minute routes do not reach it, so state the time you want when booking.
The principal images are hidden, and their shrine doors are normally shut. The temple website gives no rule on photography inside, so check with the priest during the visit.
