Dairinji Temple Sutra Repository: A Small Storehouse Rich in Carving
In the southeast corner of the Dairinji grounds stands a small building set on a north-south axis and facing west. It is the temple's sutra repository, a dozō-style storehouse of thick plastered walls built as a single storey with a separately framed roof, a construction meant to protect its contents from fire. A worship canopy projects from the front, the walls are given a mid-coat plaster finish, and the lower wall is protected with weatherboarding.
Inside is a single room with a Buddhist altar set to the east. For a building of only around 21 square meters, it carries a surprising amount of sculpture, and that is where its interest lies.

Dairinji Sutra Repository was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property on December 5, 2019, under the criterion of serving as a model of design. Built in 1857, in the late Edo period, it was repaired in the twentieth century.
The carving is the reason. The shrimp-shaped curved beam, or ebi-kōryō, of the front canopy is worked in the round with grapes and a squirrel, a playful pairing that carried wishes for abundance. Around the altar, cloud-and-dragon carvings add weight to the small interior. Together these details show the decorative tastes of their period concentrated in a modest shell.
