What the Former Aikawa Detention Branch Is
The Former Aikawa Detention Branch, in the Aikawa Shingorocho district of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, is a detention facility built in 1954, and its four parts, the office building, the kitchen and storehouse, the cell building, and the gate and wall, were listed as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2006.
Walk up Kyomachi Street in Aikawa towards the hills and an ivy-covered concrete wall appears along the roadside. Behind the gate stand three single-storey timber buildings, still joined to one another by a corridor and by doors of iron bars. Few places in Japan preserve a timber detention facility as a complete set of buildings.
The facility served for 18 years. Sado City owns the site today and opens it, interiors included, at no charge.
Eighteen Years, from Opening to Relocation
The Former Aikawa Detention Branch opened in 1954 as the Aikawa branch of Niigata Prison. Aikawa had been the administrative centre of Sado since the Edo period, and Kyomachi Street connects the Aikawa gold and silver mine with the site of the Sado Magistrate's Office. The detention facility was placed along that same line.
In 1969 a new courthouse and public prosecutors' building were completed at Nakahara in the Sawata district. The court and the detention facility nonetheless stayed in Aikawa, and the Former Aikawa Detention Branch remained in use until 1972, when operations moved to Sawata and the site was retired.
All four parts date from 1954, and their register numbers run in sequence from 15-0204 for the office building to 15-0207 for the gate and wall. All were listed under the criterion of contributing to the historical landscape of the country.
Walking the Site, from Gate to Cells
The gate opens on the northeast side of the plot, with the office building facing it. A corridor runs west from the office building to the kitchen and storehouse, and a barred door on the south side of that building leads into the cell building. The three buildings form an L, and the openings grow narrower with every step away from the gate.
The wall once enclosed all four sides of a plot roughly 35 metres north to south and 40 metres east to west. Part of the northern section on the east face and most of the west side are now missing, leaving the wall divided into northern and southern lengths.
The best order for a visit to the Former Aikawa Detention Branch is the gate and wall, then the office building, the kitchen and storehouse, and the cell building. That route follows the path from the reception rooms to the cells at the back.
Visiting and Access
Admission to the Former Aikawa Detention Branch is free, interiors included. No guide is on duty and visitors look around on their own. Opening hours and closed days are not published, so a call to the World Heritage Division of Sado City at Kirarium Sado (0259-74-2215) before setting out is the safe approach.
The drive from Ryotsu Port takes about 50 minutes. By local bus, the nearest stop is Sado Hangamura, served by the Honsen and Nanaura Kaigansen routes, about 15 minutes on foot from the site. Kyomachi Street climbs towards the hills, so the last stretch is uphill.
No official guidance on photography has been published, and the same office can answer that question. Structural detail and viewing points for each part are covered on the pages for the office building, the kitchen and storehouse, the cell building, and the gate and wall.
