The Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall
The Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall, in Aikawa Shingorocho in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, is a reinforced concrete structure built in 1954 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2006.
The gate faces the office building. It is 2 metres wide and 5 metres high, with a post on either side rising slightly above the flanking wall and a leaf of iron bars hung between them. The wall is reinforced concrete as well, 113 metres in length, with an iron door on its east side.
The three buildings on the plot are timber. Only the Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall is concrete, and that choice of material states the job it had to do.
Why It Was Listed
The Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall was listed because it keeps, in its built form, the function no detention facility can do without: the separation of inside from outside. Its register number is 15-0207, the last of the four.
A height of 5 metres is far more than a doorway needs. Raising the posts above the wall and hanging a barred leaf between them announced to the street what sort of institution lay behind, which was part of the point.
It is counted as 1 structure rather than a building, listed separately from the three timber blocks. In the Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall, what earned the listing is the boundary itself.
What Is Left of a Wall That Once Enclosed Four Sides
The wall once ran around all four sides of a plot roughly 35 metres north to south and 40 metres east to west. Part of the northern section on the east face and most of the west side have gone, leaving northern and southern lengths. Follow the Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall around the plot and the gaps are as legible as the surviving runs.
Anyone climbing Kyomachi Street towards the hills sees this wall first. Ivy covers the surface, and in summer the grey of the concrete almost disappears behind the leaves. Up close, the marks of the pour and the joints of later repairs come into view.
The barred leaf of the gate follows the same thinking as the barred doors inside the cell building and the kitchen and storehouse. Beginning at the Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall, the same grille reappears at each step deeper into the site.
Visiting the Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall
The Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall can be seen from the road without entering the site. The wall runs along the street, and from directly in front of the gate the posts, the barred leaf and the office building behind them line up in a single axis. The site inside is open at no charge.
For photographs, try two positions: square to the gate, and at an angle along the line of the wall. No official guidance on photography has been published, so the World Heritage Division of Sado City at Kirarium Sado (0259-74-2215) is the place to check.
Directions to the site and the handling of opening hours appear on the page for the Former Aikawa Detention Branch. The lane outside the wall is a residential street, so leave room for cars while you work around it.
Q&A
- Can anyone see the Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall?
- Yes. Both are visible from the road without entering the site, and the site itself is open free of charge. Opening hours and closed days are not published, so check with the World Heritage Division of Sado City at Kirarium Sado (0259-74-2215).
- How large is the Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall?
- The gate is 2 metres wide and 5 metres high, built of reinforced concrete and fitted with a leaf of iron bars. The wall is also reinforced concrete and runs 113 metres.
- Why is the Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall listed separately from the buildings?
- Because a gate and a wall count as a structure rather than a building. It is recorded as 1 structure, listed apart from the office building, the kitchen and storehouse and the cell building.
- Is the Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall intact?
- The gate survives as built. The wall once enclosed all four sides of a plot about 35 metres north to south and 40 metres east to west, but part of the northern section on the east face and most of the west side are missing, so it now stands in two lengths.
- May I photograph the Former Aikawa Detention Branch Gate and Wall?
- No official guidance on photography has been published. The outside of the wall faces a residential lane, so keep the road clear while shooting, and ask the World Heritage Division of Sado City at Kirarium Sado (0259-74-2215) if you are unsure.
