About Gokurakuji Temple Main Hall
Gokurakuji Temple Main Hall (極楽寺本堂, Gokuraku-ji Hondō) is a Buddhist worship hall built in 1758 at Gokurakuji, a Jodo temple in Wakabacho, Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, and was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2011.
The hall faces east from a platform of dressed stone. Its front presents the gable end of an Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof (Tsumairi), and a Kōhai porch crowned by a curved karahafu gable projects toward the visitor. Under the eaves, plain boat-shaped bearing blocks (funa-hijiki) and cantilevered brackets carry the roof, with none of the stacked bracket sets found on grander halls.
The building has changed over time. Raised in 1758, it was enlarged in 1809 and repaired in 1918 and again in 2010. Today the single-storey timber hall, roofed in tile, covers 343 square metres.

Gokurakuji Temple Main Hall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape of the country, one of the standard criteria for this category. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as an example of a large-scale main hall of the Jodo school.
For readers unfamiliar with the school: Jodo (Pure Land) Buddhism, founded by the monk Hōnen, centres its practice on reciting the name of Amida Buddha, and its main halls are where that practice is led.
The hall's size shows in its plan. The interior holds two rows of four rooms, eight in all, with a broad corridor (Engawa) 2 ken deep across the front. The altar platform (Shumidan) stands in the second room from the south in the rear row, which forms the innermost sanctuary.

Begin at the front. Because the great roof turns its gable end to the east, the soft curve of the karahafu porch and the sharp triangle of the gable above it stack up into a single layered facade.
Then lower your eyes to the dressed-stone platform. Seen from the east, its long horizontal line runs the full width of the front and gives the heavy roof a firm base.
Finally, look under the eaves. With only boat-shaped blocks and brackets to support them, the eaves stay quiet, and the mass of the Gokurakuji Temple Main Hall roof does the talking.

Gokurakuji Temple Main Hall faces east, so the best view of its front is from the eastern side of the grounds, standing back far enough to take in both the porch and the gable.
