About Gokurakuji Temple Shoin
Gokurakuji Temple Shoin (極楽寺書院, Gokuraku-ji Shoin) is a reception wing built between 1830 and 1868, at the close of the Edo period, at Gokurakuji, a Jodo Buddhist temple in Wakabacho, Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, and was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2011.
In a Japanese temple, a shoin is a suite of formal tatami rooms used for receiving guests. This one links the back (west side) of the priests' quarters with the main hall, placing it between the temple's living space and its place of worship. The single-storey timber building has a tiled roof and a building area of 78 square metres, and was repaired in 2010.
Why Gokurakuji Temple Shoin Was Registered
Gokurakuji Temple Shoin was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs draws attention to the care taken over its interior design.
The plan is simple. Two 8-mat rooms sit side by side from north to south, each with a 1-ken-wide tatami corridor along its east side, and plank verandas (Kure-en) run along both the east and west faces.
On the east side, the matted corridor and the wooden veranda form two layers between the rooms and the outside, which gives this small reception wing a sense of depth.
Inside Gokurakuji Temple Shoin
The principal room of Gokurakuji Temple Shoin has the three fixtures of a formal Shoin-zukuri reception room: a display alcove (Tokonoma), shelves, and a built-in desk alcove (Tsukeshoin). Here they are fitted into a room of just 8 mats.
An ornamental transom (Ranma) marks the boundary with the adjoining room. The desk alcove is fitted with finely made shoji screens, and the ceiling is of the batten type (Saobuchi-tenjō), with its battens finished in black lacquer.
Those dark battens, running at regular intervals across the ceiling, give a small room a crisp, ordered look. Take your time moving from the alcove to the desk, the transom and the ceiling; the craftsmanship is in the details.
Visiting Gokurakuji Temple Shoin
What makes Gokurakuji Temple Shoin worth seeing, the alcove, desk alcove and lacquered ceiling, is all indoors. The building itself lies behind the main hall and the priests' quarters, on their west side.
