What Is the Gyokusendo Gangi?
The Gyokusendo Gangi (玉川堂雁木, Gyokusendō Gangi) is a single-storey wooden covered walkway of the Taisho period in Tsubame Aza Nishigo, Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on July 8, 2008.
A gangi is a roofed arcade built out from the house fronts along a street, a fixture of the snowy towns of Echigo, as the Niigata region was once called. It keeps pedestrians out of the drifts in winter, and a row of them gives a street its character.
The Gyokusendo Gangi faces east onto the street. It is 9.2 meters long but only 1.3 meters deep, with a building area of 12 square meters, and the national database dates it to the Taisho period (1912 to 1925).
Why the Gyokusendo Gangi Was Registered
The Gyokusendo Gangi was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with giving the street a traditional appearance.

How the Gyokusendo Gangi Is Built
The Gyokusendo Gangi has a Maneki-yane roof, a gable with the ridge pushed toward one side so that the two slopes are of unequal length, covered in Sangawara-buki tiles.
Look at the posts: the two sides are built differently. On the street side, posts stand directly on foundation stones and carry the eave beam. On the shop side, a sill rests on the stones, posts rise from it, and they are braced by a lintel and a Nageshi tie beam, with the ridge beam laid on top. The open side is kept light, while the side against the building is framed more solidly.
The walls are clad in vertical boards, and the narrow wall strips above are finished in plaster. From the street, the vertical lines of the boards play against the white band above.
Visiting the Gyokusendo Gangi
Because the Gyokusendo Gangi fronts the street, its exterior can be viewed from the road. There is no separate interior to open; the structure itself is open to the street.
The space under and behind the gangi is Gyokusendo property, so check with staff during business hours before stepping in. If you take photos from the road, watch for traffic and other pedestrians.
