The Street Wall beside the Gate
The Honkoji Temple Wall (本光寺塀) is a temple wall of the end of the Edo period in Sawanekagomachi, Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on March 7, 2008 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a tiled timber wall 14 metres long, moved here in 1973; registration number 15-0295.
Walls on Either Side of the Gate
The Honkoji Temple Wall runs along the street to the east and west of the main gate: the eastern section turns a corner over 9.0 metres, the western over 4.8 metres, and it stands about 2 metres high (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
On a tuff base 1 metre high sits a sill with posts and tie-rails, the panels plastered between exposed timbers; brackets carry a purlin that supports boarded eaves under pantiles (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
