Isurugi Shrine in Gotanda-machi, Nagaoka

Isurugi Shrine (Nagaoka) (石動神社, Isurugi Jinja) is a neighborhood Shinto shrine at Kaminoyama in Gotanda-machi, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, whose main hall and worship hall, both built in 1934, were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on November 29, 2006.

A second Isurugi Shrine, in Hakushincho, Kita Ward, Niigata City, also has a registered main hall and worship hall, so this site adds the city name to tell the two apart. The Nagaoka shrine belongs to the Gotanda-machi Neighborhood Association, the residents' association of the local district, and the Nagaoka City Science Museum lists its owner simply as "local residents."

The grounds lie west of the Shinano River, at the western edge of the Sekihara district. Kaminoyama, the name of the small locality, means roughly "upper hill," and the buildings sit on rising ground beside the houses.

Building in 1934 and registration

The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates both buildings to 1934, which suggests they were put up together as a single set. For the main hall, the Agency names the builder: Takagi Yosuke (高木要助元久), a local carpenter.

The two were registered in the 53rd round, as numbers 15-0229 (main hall) and 15-0230 (worship hall), under the criterion of being difficult to reproduce. Craftsmanship, not size, is what earned them recognition. The worship hall covers 7.7 square meters and the main hall only 1.4 square meters.

Both use nemagari timber: trunks that grew with a bow at the base, as trees on snowy mountain slopes often do. The carpenters kept that curve rather than straightening it, in a curved tie beam of the main hall and in the porch posts of the worship hall. Carved dragons appear on both buildings.

Layout of the Isurugi Shrine (Nagaoka) grounds

The arrangement is simple. The worship hall stands in front on a stone platform, a hip-and-gable building just 2.8 meters across and 2.8 meters deep, roofed in copper sheet.

Behind it, only a few meters away, the main hall is housed inside an oiya, a protective shelter built around a shrine. What a visitor sees is the outer wall of that shelter, not the shingle-roofed sanctuary itself. Standing in front of the worship hall, you can make out the shelter continuing behind it.

Visiting Isurugi Shrine (Nagaoka)

Isurugi Shrine (Nagaoka) is a community shrine cared for by the neighborhood association, with no shrine office or website. You can enter the grounds and look at the buildings from outside. No visiting hours or fees are published, and no opening of the interiors is announced. We found no published photography policy either; photograph the exteriors quietly and do not disturb anyone praying.

The shrine is about 7 kilometers west of JR Nagaoka Station in a straight line, across the Shinano River in the Sekihara district, and a car or taxi is the practical choice. Echigo Kotsu buses run from Nagaoka Station toward Sekihara, but check the nearest stop and the timetable before you set out. The registered address is 447 Kaminoyama, Gotanda-machi, Nagaoka City. No parking is signposted, so take care not to block the narrow residential roads.
