What the Isurugi Shrine Worship Hall in Nagaoka is
The Isurugi Shrine Worship Hall (石動神社拝殿, Isurugi Jinja Haiden) is a small hip-and-gable worship hall built in 1934 at Kaminoyama, Gotanda-machi, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 29, 2006.
It belongs to Isurugi Shrine (Nagaoka), owned by the Gotanda-machi Neighborhood Association, and was built in the same year as the main hall behind it. Isurugi Shrine in Niigata City has a worship hall of the same name, but that is a separate building from the late Edo period.
The hall stands on a stone platform in front of the main hall. Its plan is nearly square, 2.8 meters across the front and 2.8 meters deep, for a building area of 7.7 square meters. The roof is Irimoya-zukuri, hipped below and gabled above, covered in copper sheet, with the entrance on the long side under the eaves (Hirairi). Since the main hall is hidden inside a shelter, this is the building where you actually see the shrine's carpentry.
Why the Isurugi Shrine Worship Hall was registered
The Isurugi Shrine Worship Hall was registered in the 53rd round as number 15-0230. Like the main hall, it qualified as difficult to reproduce, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out its technical skill as what makes it valuable.
The focus is the front porch (Kōhai). Its posts are made of nemagari timber, wood that grew with a bend at the base, as trees on snowy slopes often do, and the upper part of the front is shaped in a comb-like (kushigata) outline. Posts are normally cut from straight timber; here the carpenters put the curved wood where everyone would see it and made the bend part of the design.
The carving deserves attention too. The Agency describes the dragon above the porch tie beam and the Chinese lions on the Kibana, the carved beam ends, as full of movement.
What to look for at the Isurugi Shrine Worship Hall
Start in front of the hall and look at the porch posts. The two posts keep the bend of the tree, and above them sits the comb-shaped outline of the upper front. The result is a softer face than a shrine built only from straight members.
Then look above the tie beam that joins the posts, where a dragon is carved in a winding pose. Follow the beam to its ends, and the projecting kibana turn out to be Chinese lions.
The main hall uses the same nemagari timber and also has a dragon above its porch tie beam, so the two buildings of 1934 echo each other in both material and subject. With the main hall enclosed in its shelter, though, the worship hall is the only place to see these features for yourself.
Visiting the Isurugi Shrine Worship Hall
The exterior of the Isurugi Shrine Worship Hall can be viewed freely from the grounds. Neither the neighborhood association nor Nagaoka City announces any opening of the interior.
Look at the porch posts from the side as well as from the front to read their curve. The dragon and lions sit in the shade of the eaves, so a bright day helps. No photography policy is published; photograph the exterior without disturbing anyone at prayer. Directions to the shrine are on the Isurugi Shrine (Nagaoka) page.
