What Is Jokyoji Temple Main Hall?
Jokyoji Temple Main Hall (常敬寺本堂, Jōkyō-ji Hondō) is the worship hall of Jokyoji Temple, a Shin Buddhist temple of the Ōtani school in Teramachi 2-chome, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture; it was built in 1731 and became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on August 6, 2025, under registration number 15-0606.
The single-storey timber hall carries a hip-and-gable roof in the Irimoya-zukuri form, sheathed in copper (Dōban-buki), with a projecting entrance canopy, or Kōhai, across the front. It measures 16.4 meters across by 16.7 meters deep, a near-square footprint covering 308 square meters. The hall was repaired in 1988.
Jokyoji Temple arrived in Takada's temple quarter in 1666, so the main hall went up 65 years after the move.
Why Jokyoji Temple Main Hall Was Registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered Jokyoji Temple Main Hall as "a model of form," and its reasoning rests on the floor plan.
Inside, the hall divides into three zones: the inner sanctuary, or Naijin, where the image of Amida Buddha is enshrined; the outer hall, or Gejin, where worshippers sit; and side rooms called yoma flanking the sanctuary. Shin Buddhism puts its weight on gatherings of lay followers listening to sermons, so its halls give far more floor to the congregation than to the altar. Jokyoji Temple Main Hall follows that arrangement closely, and the Agency's description calls it a good example of a mid-Edo Shin Buddhist main hall.
Heavy snow makes old wooden halls hard to keep in this region. On the temple's blog, Jokyo-ji's assistant priest notes that among the main halls still standing in Teramachi, this one appears to be the second or third oldest.
Jokyoji Temple Main Hall's Gilded Dharma-Wheel Transom
Inside Jokyoji Temple Main Hall, look up at the boundary between the outer hall and the sanctuary. A carved transom panel covered in gold leaf fills the space there, worked in the shape of a dharma wheel, the Buddhist symbol of teaching set in motion. It sits exactly where the gaze of anyone seated in the outer hall is drawn toward the altar.
For the exterior, walk through the main gate and stand facing the hall. Jokyo-ji's main hall faces east, with the entrance canopy pushing out beneath the broad hip-and-gable roof. Because the plan is almost square, a view from an angle across the gable end shows how close the width and depth are.
Visiting Jokyoji Temple Main Hall
The exterior of Jokyoji Temple Main Hall can be seen at any time from the temple grounds, and no admission fee is charged. To go inside and see the transom and sanctuary, the temple asks visitors to telephone ahead. The temple publishes no guidance on photography indoors, so ask when you arrange your visit.
