A 1915 Guest Wing That Still Takes Guests
Kansuiro Taisho Room (環翠楼大正の間, Kansuirō Taishō no Ma) is a two-storey timber guest building of 1915 at the Kansuiro inn in Murasugi, Agano City, Niigata Prefecture, and it was entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 25 February 2016.
The name is misleading in English. Ma means a room, but the Kansuiro Taisho Room is a whole building with a tiled roof and a footprint of 116 square metres. It holds four guest units, two on each floor, which the inn's price list calls Tsuru, Kame, Take and Ume: crane, tortoise, bamboo and plum. Each unit is a pair of connecting eight-mat tatami rooms, and the inn says the four are laid out almost identically.
Why the Taisho Room Was Registered
The Kansuiro Taisho Room carries registration number 15-0424, from the 83rd round of registrations, under the criterion that it contributes to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs opens its note by placing the building inside the cedar woods that surround the inn, then picks out four features. The plan is long and narrow. The centre of the front steps forward to form an entrance porch. Each room is entered from a broad veranda corridor, an hiroen, on the east side. And while details such as the soffits under the eaves borrow from Western design, the interiors are finished with careful joinery in the refined, tea-house-influenced sukiya manner.
A Western touch on the outside and a thoroughly Japanese room within: that pairing is what the register records here, kept alive in a guest wing that has never stopped being used.
Registration is the lighter of Japan's two systems of protection, and it allows interior work as long as the exterior is not substantially altered. The inn renovated the Taisho Room in 2019, putting in new plumbing and air conditioning, and the building has gone on hosting guests past its hundredth year.
What to Look for at the Kansuiro Taisho Room
Start at the front. Only the middle of the long two-storey block projects, and that projection is the porch. Stand beneath it and look up at the underside of the eaves. These soffits are the detail the Agency cites as Western in character, and they sit, a little unexpectedly, under an ordinary Japanese tiled roof.
Inside, the hiroen is the thing. Guests pass along it on the east side to reach each room, and the inn describes a view of greenery spanning roughly 180 degrees from it. Sitting there, the trees of a garden of about 6,000 tsubo fill most of the frame.
The rooms reward a closer look at posts, ceilings and the sliding fittings, where the "careful joinery" of the official description shows. Because the four units are nearly identical, the room you are given is a fair sample of the whole building.
Staying in the Kansuiro Taisho Room
The Kansuiro Taisho Room is in daily use, and no sightseeing visits are advertised: the way in is to book a night. Each unit sleeps one to six. According to the inn's price list, two people sharing on a weekday pay from 26,400 yen per person with dinner and breakfast, tax included, plus a 150-yen bathing tax (checked 5 October 2026). Saturdays, nights before holidays and peak seasons cost more.
A few conditions apply only to this building. Children below primary-school age cannot stay here. Guests cannot choose which of the four units they get, though the inn gives ground-floor rooms to people with limited mobility. Despite soundproofing, footsteps can carry between floors of the timber structure, and the inn advises light sleepers to choose elsewhere. The units have toilets but no baths; guests use the large public bath or the private family bath, which needs no booking.
The exterior can be seen from the garden, though the inn does not say whether non-guests may enter the grounds. No photography rules are published, so keep other guests out of your pictures and ask the staff if unsure. Directions to the inn are on the Kansuiro page.
