Ninomiya Family Main House
South of central Niigata, on the east bank of the Shinano River in the Tawarayanagi district of Konan Ward, stands the Main House of the Ninomiya family farm. It is a single-story timber building with a tiled roof, covering about 215 square meters, and it was put up in 1918 (Taisho 7). The reason for that date is local memory: a flood in 1917 swept through the riverside farmland, and the house was rebuilt in its wake.
This Ninomiya line is the head family. The well-known landowning Ninomiya of Seiro, whose storehouses and gate are also on the national register, were a branch of this house. The Tawarayanagi family farmed beside the river rather than commanding a thousand-hectare estate, and the main house reflects that more grounded life.

The Main House was added to the national register of Tangible Cultural Properties in 2000 under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape. In form it follows tradition: a gabled, tile-roofed house entered from the gable end, the tsumairi arrangement common to farmhouses of the region. What sets it apart is the carpentry. The posts and beams are unusually even and uniform, a sign of the modern wood-handling that had reached rural building by the Taisho years, so the house reads as a traditional farmhouse rebuilt with early-twentieth-century technique.
A house of this kind records a moment of transition, when older village forms were carried on with newer materials and methods. Sitting low among the fields along the Shinano, it keeps its place in the riverside farming landscape, which is the value the register recognizes.

The Main House is a private residence in private ownership, registered together with a farm building of 1948 on the same property, and it is not open to the public. Visitors should respect that it remains a lived-in home and view it only from public ways, without entering the grounds.
