Rengebuji Niomon
Southeast of the main hall, an east-facing gate marks the formal approach to the heart of Rengebuji. This is the Niomon, an eight-legged gate (hakkyakumon) of about nineteen square meters, roofed in tile over a hip-and-gable (irimoya) form. A pair of guardian figures, the Kongo Rikishi, stands in the two rear side bays. Rengebuji, a Shingon temple set in a valley at Kobiei in southern Sado, counts its founding by tradition to Kukai in the early ninth century.
Why It Is Designated
The gate dates to 1822, in the late Edo period. Its pillars are all round in section, and the bracket sets are worked to two steps (futatesaki), giving the structure a level of detailing above the ordinary temple gate. Twelve stone plinths carry the columns, and each is carved with the name of a donor, a record of the lay devotion that paid for the building. The gate was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2002 under the criterion for works that serve as a model of their form.
What to See
Pause at the base of the columns before passing through. The donor names cut into the twelve stone plinths are still legible, a direct trace of the people who funded the gate two centuries ago. The two Kongo Rikishi in the rear bays follow the open-mouthed and closed-mouthed pairing that guards a temple entrance, and the round columns and stepped brackets repay a look upward into the eaves.
