Rengebuji Hakkakudo
North of Rengebuji's sutra repository stands the Hakkakudo, an octagonal hall roofed in copper sheet, its plan a compact ten square meters. Inside, each bay opens into a small triangular chamber, and every chamber holds a miniature shrine (kuden). The temple around it, in the Kobiei hills of southern Sado, is one of three sites that Shingon tradition holds as its great sacred places, alongside Kongoji and Muroji.
Why It Is Designated
Built in the mid-Edo period, the hall carries eave brackets worked to three steps (mitesaki), with carved bracket arms and applied sculpture used freely across the exterior. The carving is arranged so that the whole roofline reads as a dragon moving through cloud. That unusual conception, difficult to reproduce, is why the hall was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2002 under the criterion for works not easily recreated.
What to See
The Hakkakudo repays slow looking. Its dragon-and-cloud program is not a single carved panel but a composition spread across the brackets and eaves, so it resolves only as you circle the building. Paired with the neighboring Hassodo, it forms one of the two most idiosyncratic structures at Rengebuji, and the eight triangular interior chambers make its small footprint feel far larger than ten square meters.
