Rengebuji Hassodo

On a rise north of the main hall stands the Hassodo, the Hall of the Eight Patriarchs, dedicated to the founding masters of the Shingon lineage. It is a three-bay hall of about twenty-nine square meters, hip-and-gable in form, roofed in copper sheet worked to imitate thatch. Rengebuji, set in a hill-ringed valley at Kobiei in southern Sado, is by tradition a foundation of Kukai from the early ninth century.

Why It Is Designated

The hall carries bracket sets of five steps (gotesaki), an exceptional depth rarely seen, and the thatch-form roof combined with that projection gives the building an unusually large-roofed presence. Inside, the frame of rainbow beams (koryo) and strut supports is left exposed, and the whole interior is polychromed. Together with the octagonal hall nearby, the Hassodo was registered in 2002 as a Tangible Cultural Property under the criterion for works not easily recreated.

What to See

Approach from below to feel the weight of the roof, which the five-step brackets push out well beyond the walls. The painted interior framing is the reward here, since the exposed beams and struts were finished in color rather than left plain. The hall pairs with the octagonal Hakkakudo as the two boldest designs on the grounds, and the short climb to its knoll gives a view back over the valley precinct.
