Rengebuji Mumyobashi
On the approach to the Okunoin, the inner sanctuary hall dedicated to Kukai, a short stone bridge crosses the watercourse along the path. This is the Mumyobashi, a stone girder bridge about 4.1 meters long and 1.6 meters wide. A document of 1800 records it as the bridge to the inner mausoleum. Rengebuji, which it serves, lies in the Kobiei hills of southern Sado and traces its founding by tradition to Kukai around 806.
Why It Is Designated
The bridge is gently arched, and a bearing block on the central pier carries three lines of stone girders. Underneath, thirty-six paving slabs each bear a carved Sanskrit seed-syllable (bonji), so the underside of the crossing is a field of esoteric letters. Both the design and the stone-cutting technique are of note, and the bridge was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2002 under the criterion for works that serve as a model of their form.
What to See
Most visitors cross the Mumyobashi without noticing what lies beneath their feet. The thirty-six seed-syllables carved on the undersides of the slabs are hard to see from the deck, but they turn a plain crossing into part of the pilgrimage to the inner sanctuary. The arch and the three-girder structure on a single central pier show that a working footbridge could also be a piece of careful stonework.
