Rengebuji Mitsugondo
West of the main hall stands the Mitsugondo, a three-bay hall of about twenty-nine square meters and the sixth station of the Sado Shikoku pilgrimage. Its pyramidal (hogyo) roof is laid in pantile, with a one-bay offering porch across the front. Rengebuji, the Shingon temple that holds it, sits in a valley at Kobiei in the south of Sado and is counted among the three great sacred places of the Shingon school.
Why It Is Designated
The hall is said to have been built in 1844, late in the Edo period. Though small, it is finished with care: the bracket sets are worked as degumi, and the interior curved supports (shirin) carry carving. That density of craftsmanship in a modest building is why the Mitsugondo was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2002 under the criterion for works that serve as a model of their form.
What to See
As the sixth station on the island's own Shikoku circuit, the Mitsugondo still draws pilgrims, so you may find it in use rather than empty. The detail to seek is inside and overhead: the carved curved supports under the eaves reward a close look, and the one-bay front porch frames the approach. Its scale makes it an easy stop on the way between the main hall and the western parts of the grounds.
