Rengebuji Dokkodo
Beyond the forecourt of Rengebuji's main hall, a footpath drops west into a wooded ravine and ends at a spring. Beside the water stands the Dokkodo, a stone shrine with a footprint of only about three square meters. It is built entirely of stone, gable-roofed, and entered from the gable end (tsumairi). The temple itself, in the Kobiei hills of southern Sado, is by tradition a foundation of Kukai around the year 806.
Why It Is Designated
A flood in 1979 brought the little shrine down, and it was rebuilt from its own stones. One block set aside during that repair carries a carved date, Genna 8, or 1622, which places the shrine's origin in the early Edo period. The facade is divided into three bays, and each end of the stone ridge is finished with a carved demon face (kimen). Precise stonework of this kind earned the shrine registration as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2002, listed under the criterion for objects that serve as a model of their form.
What to See
The Dokkodo rewards the short walk out to it. Because it is cut from stone rather than assembled in timber, the joints and the ridge read almost like sculpture, and the two demon masks at the ridge ends are easy to miss unless you look closely. Reaching the shrine means following the ravine past the main precinct, so it stays quiet even when the temple's July hydrangeas draw visitors.
