A building born from the main house
The Former Workshop stands to the north of the main house, a long structure put up in 1883 (Meiji 16). Its purpose was practical: it was built to mill and prepare the timber needed for the main house itself.
It runs 18 metres along a north-south ridge, gabled and roofed in pantiles, with an open, roofed-over eave along the south side. The frame is essentially that of a warehouse, honest about the rough work it once held.
Why it was registered
Listed on 25 May 2000, the workshop was recognised for contributing to the historic character of the estate. Buildings raised to support a great construction project rarely survive once the project is done, and this one did.
It records a stage in the estate's making that finished structures usually erase, the phase when the site was a working timber yard rather than a landlord's residence.
How you meet it today
Visitors now encounter the workshop as the estate shop, so it is one of the buildings you are most likely to step into without planning to. That everyday reuse suits a structure that was always about work.
Under the roof, the long span and plain framing are still legible above the shelves; it is worth pausing to register that this practical shed predates the mansion it helped build.
