The Poet's Western Wing
The Northern Culture Museum Niigata Annex Western-Style Building (北方文化博物館新潟分館洋館) in Minamihamadori, Chuo Ward, Niigata City, is a two-storey timber building in Western style, erected around 1928 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 April 2000.
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Ito family, who had bought the property at the end of the Meiji era, built the Northern Culture Museum Niigata Annex Western-Style Building around 1928. It adjoins the southeast of the main house and rises a full two storeys over a footprint of 79 square metres.
After the war it became the home of Aizu Yaichi (會津八一), poet, calligrapher and historian of Buddhist art. The agency records that he lived here from 1946 for about ten years.
Mortar Render and Early Showa Details
The Northern Culture Museum Niigata Annex Western-Style Building was registered as a model of good design. Its outer walls carry a German-style mortar render, and the agency singles out the joinery and the moulded ceiling cornices as characteristic of early Showa design in the late 1920s.
What makes the building rewarding is its neighbour. A corridor ties it to a Meiji house finished in sukiya taste, yet the two are composed in entirely different architectural languages. A Japanese villa of the 1890s and a Western wing of the late 1920s share one estate.
The roof is tiled, like that of the main house, and the frame behind the render is timber.
Ten Years at Minamihama Shūsōdō
The museum's history tells how Yaichi, bombed out in 1945, took refuge in the former town of Nakajo in Niigata Prefecture and the following year became president of the newspaper Yukan Niigata. Sakaguchi Kenkichi, asked to find him lodgings in the city, turned to the Ito family's Niigata villa, and Yaichi named its Western wing Minamihama Shūsōdō.
Yaichi had taught at Waseda University in Tokyo and earned his doctorate for research on the history of Buddhist art. While living in the Northern Culture Museum Niigata Annex Western-Style Building he was named professor emeritus of Waseda in 1948 and an honorary citizen of Niigata in 1951, the same year his collected tanka won the Yomiuri Prize for Literature.
The annex floor plan shows both storeys as galleries, with an entrance hall of their own on the ground floor.
Visiting the Western-Style Building
Today the Northern Culture Museum Niigata Annex Western-Style Building is the annex's gallery, showing Yaichi's calligraphy and papers alongside calligraphy by Ryōkan, the Edo-period monk-poet. The museum notes that some items are reproductions and that the displays change with the seasons.
Because of the permanent displays, the building is not available for hire. Only the tatami rooms are rented out for events.
Look beyond the exhibits to the window joinery and the ceiling cornices. Ask at reception before photographing the displays.
