A Second Home Built on Oil Money
The Northern Culture Museum Niigata Annex Main House (北方文化博物館新潟分館主屋) in Minamihamadori, Chuo Ward, Niigata City, is a two-storey timber house in the Japanese manner, built around 1895 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 April 2000.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the tradition that a Mr. Shimizu of Nagaoka built it. The museum names him as Shimizu Tsunesaku, who made a fortune from the Nishiyama oil field at Amaze in Izumozaki. The house later passed to the Ito family, great landowners from Yokogoshi (now part of Konan Ward), and since 1946 it has served as the annex of the Northern Culture Museum.
Of the seven registered buildings on the site, the Northern Culture Museum Niigata Annex Main House is the only one older than the Ito era. It covers 174 square metres. Step through the front gate on the southwest side and its entrance is directly ahead.
Plain Outside, Polished Within
The Northern Culture Museum Niigata Annex Main House was registered as a model of good design. The agency describes a modest exterior of horizontal weatherboard (Shitami-itabari) and pantiles (Sangawara-buki) wrapped around a refined interior in Sukiya-zukuri taste, and sees in that contrast the way a villa of the period was meant to work.
Little show toward the street; real care in the rooms where guests were received. That difference is the core of the listing.
The house was also the anchor for everything the Itos added: the front gate, storehouse and brick wall of 1915, the teahouse of the mid-1920s, and the Western-style building of about 1928, which was joined directly to its southeast side.
Named Rooms and a Garden View
The annex floor plan labels the principal rooms of the Northern Culture Museum Niigata Annex Main House. On the ground floor, 坐忘 lies to the north with 松風 beside it; upstairs is 潮音堂. The entrance hall and the museum office are also on the ground floor, so a visit starts here.
Behind the main house and the Western-style building lies a dry landscape garden. The museum presents the house as an open plan in shoin style, facing a Japanese stroll garden. Once you are in the rooms, lower yourself to seated height and see how the posts frame the view.
Published sources say little about the finer details. The alcoves, fittings and ceilings that the agency sums up in the single word "sukiya" are things to find for yourself on site.
Visiting the Main House
The Northern Culture Museum Niigata Annex Main House is open as part of the annex museum, and admission includes the rooms. On the floor plan a corridor runs from the main house to the galleries in the Western-style building.
The ground-floor room 坐忘, made up of 8-mat and 6-mat rooms with a Mizuya preparation area, can be booked for tea gatherings. The annex lists a fee of 17,600 yen a day (tax included, in force since October 2019, admission extra), and bookings are handled by the main museum on 025-385-2001.
