A Toshogu Inside a Shelter
The Rengebuji Temple Toshogu Shrine (蓮華峰寺東照宮) is a one-bay shrine of the mid-Edo period in the precinct of Rengebuji Temple in Kobie, Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 21, 2002 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber shrine with a wooden-shingle roof and a building area of 3.5 square metres; registration number 15-0127.
A Memorial Shrine to Tokugawa Ieyasu
The Rengebuji Temple Toshogu Shrine stands inside a shelter north of the Octagonal Hall, side by side with the Taitokuin Mausoleum (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Sado Sightseeing Navi notes memorial shrines to Tokugawa Ieyasu and Hidetada in the precinct; the Toshogu is the one for Ieyasu.
The patterns of its carving place it in the mid-Edo period (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Was Registered
The Rengebuji Temple Toshogu Shrine was registered as a structure that would not be easy to reproduce. The Agency notes the lavish carving, colour and bracketing given to so small a shrine.
What to Look For
It is a one-bay shrine (ikkensha) with a hip-and-gable roof of wooden shingles, its outer frame entirely covered in carving and colour (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The bracketing projects in three steps, and the eaves are formed of carved boards in two tiers.
You see it through the lattice of the shelter. Compare the roof with its neighbour: the Rengebuji Temple Toshogu Shrine is hip-and-gable, the Taitokuin Mausoleum gabled.
