Shugetsuji Temple Main Hall: a Soto Zen hall at the foot of Mount Yahiko

Shugetsuji Temple Main Hall (種月寺本堂, Shugetsu-ji Hondō) is a Sōtō Zen worship hall in Ishize, Nishikan Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture, built in 1699 in the mid-Edo period and designated an Important Cultural Property in 1989.

Shugetsu-ji is a long-established Sōtō temple of Echigo, the old name for Niigata. Tradition dates its founding to 1446, when the monk Nan'ei Kensō, third abbot of Kōun-ji in Murakami, began building it at the command of the provincial governor Uesugi Fusatomo. A chronology published by Niigata City records the first main hall as finished in 1448 and the full set of monastery buildings, including a monks' hall and bath house, as largely complete by 1453. By the 16th century the temple was counted as one of the four great Sōtō training centres of Echigo, alongside Kōun-ji, Jikō-ji and Undō-an.

The main hall standing today is not the medieval one. It is a rebuilding of the late 17th century, and it is the building that the national designation covers.

Why Shugetsuji Temple Main Hall was designated

Shugetsuji Temple Main Hall was designated an Important Cultural Property on 2 September 1989. The Agency for Cultural Affairs explains the choice in three steps. The hall was built in 1699 by carpenters from Izumozaki, a guild active across Niigata in the Edo period. Its plan, eight rooms arranged behind an earthen-floored entrance zone, shows the defining features of a Sōtō Zen main hall clearly. And it has been altered very little, so it survives in good condition as a representative example of the type in Echigo.

The official record gives the hall as 24.0 metres in Ketayuki and 18.4 metres in Harima, single-storeyed, with a hipped roof (Yosemune-zukuri) of thatch (Kayabuki) that is temporarily covered with iron sheet. A founder's hall (kaisandō) is attached at the back: 9.4 by 5.5 metres, gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) and iron-roofed, joined to the main hall at its east end. Two Munafuda ridge tags are designated together with the building. Niigata City's own page gives the harima as 18.8 metres; this article follows the Agency's figure.

Niigata City names the master carpenter as Oguro Jinshichi of Izumozaki and records that construction began in 1698. The founder's hall behind the main hall was added in 1813.

Reading the plan of Shugetsuji Temple Main Hall

The interior of Shugetsuji Temple Main Hall is what the Agency means when it calls the hall typical of its school, and it repays a slow look. The front of the hall faces east. Along that side runs an earthen-floored zone (roji) and a broad veranda-like floor (ōen), and behind them the hall is divided into two rows of four rooms.

Niigata City lists them from the south. In the front row are the ubasoku room, the ōma or great room, the ubai room, and the tea room; ubasoku and ubai are the Buddhist terms for lay men and lay women. In the back row are the memorial-tablet hall, the sanctuary (Naijin), and two rooms named shicchū. The sanctuary and the memorial-tablet hall have plank floors, and every other room is laid with tatami, so the floor itself tells you which rooms hold the principal image and the memorial tablets.

Look at the posts. Apart from a few special members, they are square in section with chamfered corners, and the Agency remarks on their thickness and the sturdy frame they produce. Niigata City notes the same chamfered square posts, so this is the detail both descriptions agree on.

From outside, the dominant feature is the roof. Niigata City records that iron sheet was laid over the thatch in 1959 as a temporary covering, and that a conservation repair, including work on the roof, was carried out in 2007 and 2008. The thatch is still there under the sheet, which is why the official record describes the roof as thatched with a temporary iron covering rather than as a metal roof.

Visiting Shugetsuji Temple Main Hall

Shugetsuji Temple Main Hall is at 3356 Ishize, Nishikan Ward, close to Iwamuro Onsen at the northern foot of Mount Yahiko. The Niigata City tourism guide gives the journey as about 10 minutes by car from either Iwamuro Station on the JR Echigo Line or Yahiko Station on the JR Yahiko Line, and the temple has parking.

The approach passes through the main gate and then a gate set in a roofed corridor, both of which Niigata City dates to 1857 (the main gate was rebuilt in 1877), before the main hall comes into view. The exterior can be seen from the temple grounds. The temple and the city do not publish visiting hours or a fee for the interior, so ask Shugetsu-ji directly (0256-82-2160) before your visit if you hope to go inside or take photographs. Memorial services are held in the hall, and the interior may not be open while one is taking place.
