Shuseian
Shuseian (習静菴) in Tokimizu, Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture, is a city-owned tea house and storehouse, a tea house of the late Taisho period and a storehouse of the early Meiji period, registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on October 31, 2022 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency notes that the tea house came from an old family house in the city and was moved in 2001 and 2007, and that the storehouse came from a family house in the Chiyagawa area and was moved in 2007.
The Two Buildings
The tea house sets a three-mat tea room beside a four-and-a-half-mat waiting room under a gabled copper roof, linked by an earthen-floored eave whose stepping stones recall the snow arcades of the region (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The storehouse is a two-storey gabled store, plastered up to the eaves band, with a stout central post carrying the main beam; its heavy timbers were made to bear the snow (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Two buildings shaped by life in snow country now stand together on one site. Each building is described on its own page.
