A Red-Brick Brewery on the Suyoshi River

The Takahashi Sake Brewery New Brewery (高橋酒造新蔵, Takahashi Shuzō Shingura) is a three-storey brewery of timber-framed brick built around 1922 on the left bank of the Suyoshi River at Jizo, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on November 29, 2006 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a three-storey building of timber-framed brick with a tiled roof and a building area of 1,278 square metres; registration number 15-0235, owned by Takahashi Shuzo Co., Ltd.

Why It Was Registered

The new brewery was registered as a structure contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that its long, tall red-brick walls stand out on the left bank of the Suyoshi River.

According to Nagaoka City's web magazine, the third head of the business began the building, which took about three years and was completed in 1922.

What to Look For

The main block is 30 metres by 18 metres, running east to west under a gabled pantiled roof, three storeys of timber-framed brick. A boiler house with a raised ventilating roof is attached on the east, and lean-to roofs run around it (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The web magazine quotes a brewer saying that even when it is freezing outside the brewery stays at about 5 degrees. The entrance of a former storehouse is decorated with white concrete and brick.
