Onogawa's Buried Forest: A Geological Record of Aso's Greatest Eruption
Along a stretch of the Onogawa River in Hita City, Oita Prefecture, a 4,091-square-meter site preserves something remarkable in its bed. The deformed, charred remains of a forest that vanished roughly 90,000 years ago lie within the layered deposits. The trees were not buried gradually by sediment over centuries. They were swept up, snapped, and entombed in a single catastrophic moment by the Aso-4 pyroclastic flow, the largest eruption Aso volcano ever produced.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs designated the site as a National Natural Monument on September 21, 2011, recognizing what the layered geology along this small river reveals about one of the largest volcanic events in Japan's geological record. Thirteen tree species have been identified from the buried wood, alongside pollen from plants since extinct from the Japanese archipelago.
The Aso-4 Pyroclastic Flow
Aso volcano in central Kyushu is one of the world's great caldera volcanoes. Between roughly 270,000 and 90,000 years ago, four colossal explosive eruptions tore through the region, each leaving a distinct pyroclastic deposit known to geologists as Aso-1 through Aso-4. The fourth, the youngest and by far the largest, expelled enough hot ash, pumice, and gas to send a ground-hugging current of incandescent material racing outward in all directions.
The reach of this flow is difficult to picture. It carried across northern Kyushu and continued north until it crossed the Kanmon Strait and came to rest in what is now Hagi City, in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Ash from the same event traveled far further, settling as a recognizable layer in eastern Hokkaido more than a thousand kilometers away. The Onogawa site sits about 40 kilometers from the inferred eruption source, well within the path of destruction.
What the Layers Show
Researchers reading the riverbed exposure have divided the local geology into five units, labeled O-I through O-V. The bottommost, O-I, consists of river gravels deposited before the eruption, marking the surface on which a living forest once stood. Above it lies O-II, the Aso-4 pyroclastic flow deposit itself, subdivided further into five sublayers (O-II-a through O-II-e). O-III is a layer of volcanic mudflow material, O-IV records a debris flow with massive boulders, and O-V represents the modern river gravels at the present surface.
The buried trees concentrate in the upper part of layer O-II-d. The current interpretation runs roughly as follows. A pyroclastic surge, the thinner and faster leading edge of the flow, arrived first and shredded the forest along its path. The main body of the flow then swept in, depositing material that grades upward from ash-rich at the base to pumice-rich at the top. Tree debris collected near the top of this main deposit, where the heat of the surrounding material carbonized the wood. As gases escaped, fine ash drained away and left coarser fragments behind. Later, mudflows and debris flows reworked the surface, and the modern river gradually established its present course on top of everything.
Thirteen Species and a Vanished Climate
Identification of the wood has yielded thirteen tree species. Conifers dominate the assemblage. Species from the spruce genus (Picea), the cypress family, and Japanese cedar make up around sixty percent of the recovered wood, with beech, maple, and other broadleaf species accounting for the rest. The largest specimen recovered measured about four meters in length and 1.5 meters in diameter at the base, a pine that has been partially preserved by Hita City for study.
This species mix points to a cooler climate. Researchers estimate average temperatures roughly five to six degrees Celsius below today's, with a forest composition resembling what now grows on Yakushima Island above about 1,100 meters elevation. Pollen analysis adds another striking detail. Among the grains preserved in the sediment is sweetgum (Liquidambar) pollen, from a tree no longer native to the Japanese archipelago.
Tree-ring analysis on the outermost growth layers also yields a season for the eruption. The growth had stopped in a way consistent with winter dormancy, indicating that the Aso-4 event occurred sometime between late autumn and late spring. The conclusion matches earlier findings from the related Yatō site in Saga Prefecture.
Onogawa and Yatō: Two Sites, Two States
The Onogawa discovery is the second of its kind in Japan. The first was at Yatō in Kamimine Town, Saga Prefecture, found by chance in 1993 during rice paddy excavation and designated a National Natural Monument in 2004. The two sites preserve the same eruption but in markedly different conditions.
At Yatō, roughly 70 kilometers from the source, the trees remain close to their growth positions, a state geologists call autochthonous or "in-place" fossilization. The trunks retain their original shape, including one specimen estimated at 700 to 800 years old and 22 meters long. At Onogawa, only 40 kilometers from the source, the trees have been moved and badly deformed by the flow, classifying them as allochthonous secondary deposits. Reading the two sites together gives volcanologists a rare paired record of how a single pyroclastic flow behaves at different distances from its origin.
Visiting the Area
The Onogawa site itself is a protected scientific reserve and the excavated trees have been reburied for preservation. There is no museum or interpretive center at the river. The designated area lies within Suzure-machi, an upland district north of central Hita reached by car.
The Ono valley itself rewards the drive. A short distance further upstream, the pottery village of Onta-yaki preserves centuries-old water-powered clay processing and a working community of kilns, one of Japan's most intact folk craft sites. Along the same valley, Kototoi no Sato is a riverside park offering a quieter introduction to the landscape that visitors who only see Hita's historic Mameda merchant district often miss.
Hita itself merits a longer stay. Its Edo-period townscape in Mameda, designated a Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, sits a short walk from the central station. Yakatabune pleasure boats ply the Mikuma River through summer, and the hot springs at Amagase and Okuhita lie within easy reach. JR Hita Station connects to Hakata in just over two hours by limited express service.
