The Gate That Fronts the Estate
Hisatsune Family Residence Main Gate is a timber gate of 1924 in Kamimiyanaga, Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2001.
The estate is close to square, and this gate opens in its eastern side. It is a munamon, a ridge gate of one bay with a single doorway, meaning the roof is carried on two main posts rather than on the four of a shikyakumon. Hisatsune Family Residence Main Gate adds rear struts behind the posts for stability.
The opening is 3.0 metres wide. Smaller side doors flank it and brick walling runs away to left and right. Everyday coming and going used the side doors; the centre was for occasions. The plan states the distinction plainly.
Why It Was Registered
Hisatsune Family Residence Main Gate is registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the nation. What counted was its part in composing the eastern face of the estate rather than the design of the gate on its own.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs entry describes an imposing structure built of good zelkova. Zelkova is hard, strongly figured and slow to work. Using it for the principal members of a gate was a direct way of stating the standing of the household to anyone passing.
The eaves use widely spaced rafters with lath above, and the roof is laid in sangawara pantiles. Spacing rafters widely, rather than crowding them, gives a lighter reading under the eaves. Heavy timber below and a light eaves line above is what gives this gate its particular look.

Visiting
Hisatsune Family Residence Main Gate faces a public road and is the most easily seen of the 15 entries. From outside the doors you can work through the posts, the eaves, the roof and the side doors at leisure.
Beyond the gate is private ground and cannot be entered. Do not peer through or point a camera into the property. Keep to the roadway.
Morning suits it best. The gate faces east, so early light strikes it square on and brings out the figure in the zelkova and the relief of the tiles. Afternoons tend to be against the light.
